During the interview the recruiter asked why I left my previous job — here is what works

"Why did you leave your last job?" is one of the most common interview questions and one of the most mishandled. Candidates either overshare, speak negatively about their previous employer, or give a vague non-answer that creates suspicion.

None of these work.

The question behind the question

What the recruiter is really asking is: Are you a reliable person? Will you do the same to us? Do you leave for good reasons or bad ones? Your answer needs to reassure them on all three.

The framework that works

Structure your answer in three parts. First, what was positive about the previous role. Second, what changed or what you were looking for. Third, why this specific role is the right next step.

Example one — Leaving for growth: "I learned a great deal at my previous company and I am genuinely grateful for that experience. After three years I had taken on as much responsibility as the structure allowed, and I felt ready for a role with more scope. What drew me to this position is the opportunity to lead a team of my own and work on projects at a larger scale."

Example two — Company restructuring: "The company went through a significant restructuring last year and my role was made redundant along with several others. It was a difficult period but it gave me time to be deliberate about my next step rather than reactive. This role stood out to me because of the team's reputation and the technical challenges involved."

Example three — Culture mismatch: "The role was technically interesting but the working environment was not aligned with how I do my best work. I prefer a more collaborative style, which is one of the reasons your company culture attracted me."

What never to say

Never speak negatively about your previous manager or colleagues. Even if everything you say is true, recruiters hear it as a warning sign about how you will talk about them one day.

Never say "for more money" even if it is true. Lead with the professional reason and let compensation come up naturally later.

The preparation is the answer

The candidates who handle this question best are the ones who have thought it through before the interview. Write out your answer. Say it out loud. JJ-JobHunter generates tailored cover letters and application emails — but the interview itself requires your own preparation. Start there.
