It is one of the most deflating experiences in a job search. You receive an offer. You allow yourself to feel relieved. You may have already told people. Then comes the call.
"We have decided to move in a different direction." Or in my case: "We would like to offer you a different role within the team."
Both situations are more common than anyone talks about publicly. Here is what I learned from going through it.
First, understand that a verbal offer is not a contract in most European countries. Until you have a signed agreement, nothing is final. This is not comfortable but it is the reality.
Second, ask for clarity. You are entitled to understand what changed. A professional response: "I appreciate you letting me know. Could you help me understand what changed? That would help me in future processes."
Sometimes the answer reveals something useful. Budget was frozen. The role was redefined. A stronger internal candidate emerged. None of these are personal.
This is more nuanced. The question to ask yourself is whether this alternative role would have interested you if you had seen it first — without the context of expecting the original position.
If yes, negotiate as if it were a fresh offer. Ask for time to review the job description properly. Do not let the emotional context of the switch pressure you into accepting something that does not fit.
If no, decline professionally. "Thank you for thinking of me for this position. After reviewing it carefully I do not think it aligns with the direction I am pursuing, but I appreciate the consideration."
Do not pause your job search for any offer until contracts are signed. This is the most expensive mistake candidates make. Keep applying. Keep interviewing. Let the offer process run in parallel.
